An analysis of sustainable development and the protection of Spain's natural environment

The world is changing rapidly and our planet's natural resources are being depleted at unprecedented speed. Thanks to its privileged geographic position and long agricultural tradition, Spain has become a European laboratory for clean solutions. This report gathers the main work streams that will shape the country's future through 2030.

Global warming and the 2030 challenge

Reports from the National Climate Observatory confirm that the average temperature of the Iberian Peninsula has risen by 1.7 degrees since 1980. Protecting Mediterranean and Atlantic ecosystems demands a coordinated response by public administrations, autonomous communities and citizens.

The National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan sets a horizon of a 32% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to 1990 levels. Energy efficiency measures, clean transport and forest restoration are prioritised. Smart-grid development will enable detailed monitoring of consumption in homes and industrial parks.

Spain's role in renewable energies

Spain holds a prominent position within the European energy-transition framework. Spanish energy companies have rolled out solar and wind farms across regions such as Extremadura, Aragon and Castilla-La Mancha, totalling more than 35 GW of installed renewable capacity in early 2026.

Solar self-consumption is also experiencing an expansion stage. Current regulations make it easier to set up local energy communities where neighbours and small municipalities share photovoltaic production. These initiatives strengthen the rural fabric and provide stable supply throughout the year.

The future lies in integrating long-duration storage through batteries and reversible hydraulic pumping. Clean electricity generated at midday can then be used during night hours, ensuring effective protection of the electric system during demand peaks.

The future of farming: Agriculture 5.0

So-called Agriculture 5.0 combines sensors, satellite data and regenerative practices to optimise water use and protect biodiversity. Agricultural cooperatives in Andalusia, Valencia and Murcia are adopting precision-irrigation systems that reduce water consumption by up to 40%.

Seeds adapted to the Mediterranean climate, together with vegetation cover in olive groves and vineyards, contribute to soil protection against erosion. This development model respects natural cycles and preserves the nutritional quality of food for the next generations.

The shared goal is to ensure the country's food sovereignty and preserve the rural landscape. The protection of nature and the future of farming communities are inseparable: a healthy countryside is the guarantee of a healthy country.

The commitment is clear: to move towards a model in which economic development, environmental protection and social wellbeing walk together. The decisions we make during this decade will define the future of our children.
